Colourful Yorkshire Terrier

The “Colourful Yorkshire Terrier” is the name given by independent European canine registries, breed societies, and clubs to the group of Yorkshire Terriers that exhibit colors diverging from the breed standard set by the Kennel Club governed by the FCI.

The Kennel Club does not register Colourful Yorkshire Terrier puppies to non Kennel Club registered parents in the UK or Germany but puppies are often sold with German IHR.e.V papers which is an independent pet register with no affiliation to the Kennel Club.

Puppy registration rests solely on the integrity of breeders submitting authentic parentage of the puppies to be registered without any DNA parentage verification.

Colour & Patterns

Over the last decade, the Yorkshire Terrier breed has seen an explosion of new colors: All-Black, All-White, Blue-Eyed Merles: Blueberries, Chocoberries, Brindles, Chocolate, Lilacs, Golddust, Sable, Océan Pearl all bearing Yorkie documentation.

Breed Development

European dog registries have diverse policies regarding the registration of Colourful Yorkshire Terriers. While some registries accept all color variations within the Colourful Yorkshire Terrier group, others impose stricter rules For example, any puppy with merle ancestry in its pedugree are registered as “Colourful Terrier’ not” Colourful Yorkshire Terrier” marking an important distinction.

Moreover, to prevent health complications such as deafness and blindness, the breeding of Merle to Merle and White to White is strictly prohibited. These breeding regulations ensure the health and well-being of dogs & puppies while maintaining the integrity of the Colourful Yorkshire Terrier breed.

Dog Shows: Celebrating Colourful Yorkshire Terriers

To maintain and preserve the allure and type of Colourful Yorkshire Terriers, dog clubs organise fun and friendly dog shows. These events provide breeders with the opportunity to exhibit their beautiful dogs, showcasing their unique colors and traits. These shows not only celebrate the breed’s diversity but also foster a sense of community among breeders and enthusiasts, encouraging the exchange of knowledge and best practices to keep the breed healthy and thriving.

These events are a delightful way for breeders to display their dogs and for the public to appreciate the charm and variety of Colourful Yorkshire Terriers. They play a vital role in promoting responsible breeding practices and raising awareness about the breed’s unique qualities.

Genetic Findings

Breed Challenges: Understanding Colourful Yorkshire Terriers

While Colourful Yorkshire Terriers are registered and advertised as Yorkshire Terriers, genetic testing frequently reveals non-compliant ancestry. This complicates their genetic makeup and may lead to non desirable traits. For pet enthusiasts, it’s important to note that the charming little pup you adopt might not grow into the small, delicate, and brightly colored Yorkie you anticipated.

Many of these Colourful Yorkshire Terriers ncreasingly resembling their much larger relatives, such as the Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka, Havanese, and Shih Tzu which have been integrated into the Colourful Yorkshire due to their diverse colors in their gene pool. Additionally, solid black genetics from the Scottish Terrier and solid white genetics from the West Highland Terrier and Maltese have been introduced, further influencing their appearance and size.

Understanding these genetic intricacies can help potential owners set realistic expectations and appreciate the unique characteristics of these colourful dogs.

Another breed frequently used to create the lilac & fawn colourful Yorkshire Terriers is the Chihuahua, a perfect combination with their upright ears and tiny size found in a rainbow of colours. Nevertheless, as has already been mentioned, breeders have the opportunity to refine and define the characteristics of the Colourful Yorkshire Terrier lineage through selective breeding practices. Crossbreeding has many advantages too providing hybrid vigour.

As with the Biewer Terrier it is highly unlikely that the Colourful Yorkshire Terriers of today will ever be registered by the Kennel Club in the Yorkshire Terrier group and the Colourful Yorkshire Terriers may well need a category of their own distinction such as the Colourful Terrier as is the case in Russia with the development of the Russian Salon Dog and our very own breed the Perthshire Toy Terrier.

Golddust Yorkshire Terrier

The Golddust Yorkshire Terrier is as you would expect a Yorkshire Terrier with a completely golden coat. The Golddust Yorkshire Terrier can also be found in gold & white and gold & white parti variations.

Gold is a recessive colour so for gold puppies to be born, both parents must either be gold themselves or carry the gene for gold. As with the Chocolate Yorkshire Terrier two gold parents will always produce all gold puppies except in very rare circumstances due to other genetic factors.

Like the All-Black Yorkshire Terrier & Chocolate Yorkshire Terriers the Golddust Yorkshire Terrier encapsulates all the characteristics of the Yorkshire Terrier. This has been achieved by careful selective breeding practices by dedicated breeders.

Ocean Pearl Or Sable Yorkshire Terrier

The Ocean Pearl Yorkshire Terrier comes in many shades of fawn, gold, chocolate and red. The distribution of black hairs is dependent on the presence of other genetic factors such as furnishings, piebald and saddle.

Sable coloring in dogs is when their coat has a mix of light and dark colors. This pattern is created by a specific gene called Ay. Dogs with this gene have hairs that are light at the base and dark at the tips, giving them a beautiful, blended look. The shade of sable can vary from light to dark.

The sable pattern shows up when other genes allow it, meaning the dog’s coat can display different intensities and distributions of this coloring.

Ocean Pearl Colour Variations: Chocolate & red sable

Ocean Pearl dogs can also exhibit the stunning Chocolate Sable coats, which is a beautiful combination of two distinct colors and patterns:

  • Chocolate: Refers to a rich, brown coat color.
  • Sable: Means the coat has a mix of light and dark colors, often with a darker overlay at the tips of the hairs.

A Chocolate Sable dog has a warm brown base color with darker tips on some of the fur, creating a lovely, blended effect. This unique coloring, combined with brown eye rims, nose, and paw pads, makes Chocolate Sable dogs stand out with their gorgeous, multi-toned coats. Thanks to their special genes?
